FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens during a newborn session?

A newborn session is about capturing your baby and your family during those first days together, whether we’re photographing in the hospital or at home. I’ll guide you throughout the session and help with positioning, posing, and wrapping your baby when appropriate.

We’ll create a mix of posed images and more natural moments between you and your baby. The goal is to create photographs that feel natural and genuine while still being thoughtfully composed and polished.

What is included in my session?

Your session will include a variety of images of your baby and your family. We’ll photograph your baby on their own, including those tiny details you’ll want to remember, as well as images of you with your baby and the whole family if you have other children or pets.

At home, we can use different areas of your home depending on the light and what works best for the images. In the hospital, I’ll work with the space we have to create beautiful portraits of your family and your new baby.

I’ll guide you through the session, so you won’t have to worry about knowing how to pose or what to do. I may wrap or reposition your baby, adjust the background, or make small changes to your position to create the best photograph.

We can also include natural moments such as cuddling, feeding, or simply spending time together if those are moments you’d like photographed. If you have a family pet you’d like included, they’re welcome to join us, too.

When should we schedule our newborn session?

There’s no single “right” day for newborn photos. Hospital sessions typically take place during your hospital stay.

Home sessions are generally scheduled during the first few weeks after you bring your baby home, but we can talk about timing based on what works best for you and your baby.

Your baby doesn’t have to be asleep for the entire session. Awake, sleepy, hungry, cuddly, and all the little moments in between are completely normal—and I’m used to working with newborns at all stages of the session.

How do I prepare for a session?

Please don’t stress about getting your home perfectly clean before I arrive. Life with a newborn is beautifully messy, and I’m not expecting your house to look perfect.

Before the session, it’s helpful to make the bed and do a quick tidy of the areas we’re most likely to photograph in. Putting away things on the floor, phone cords, chargers, and other items that might be distracting is usually all that’s needed.

You don’t need to deep clean or spend hours getting the house ready. Once I arrive, I’ll look at the space and the light and help determine what will work best for your photos.

What should we wear?

I recommend simple, comfortable clothing in neutral or soft colors. Creams, whites, beige, browns, soft blues, and other muted tones tend to photograph beautifully.

You don’t need everyone to match. Coordinating colors and textures usually looks more natural than identical outfits. I would generally avoid large logos, very bold patterns, or anything that might distract from your family and your baby.

Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable in—you want to be able to relax and enjoy your time with your baby.

Do you pose the baby?

Yes. I’ll guide and position your baby throughout the session when appropriate, including wrapping and making small adjustments to their hands, head, or body.

I’ll also direct you and your family into different positions so you don’t have to figure out what to do in front of the camera. We’ll also leave room for natural interactions and moments that happen along the way.

What if my baby is fussy or needs to eat?

That’s completely normal. Newborns need to eat, be changed, be held, and sometimes just need a break. We’ll take our time and work around your baby’s needs rather than trying to force the session to happen on a schedule.

Can siblings and pets be included?

Absolutely. Siblings and family pets are welcome to be part of the session. We’ll also make time for photographs of just your baby and of you with your baby.

How do I book if I don’t know when my baby will arrive?

You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will arrive to book your newborn session. When you book, I’ll note your due date and plan your session around that timeframe.

Once your baby arrives, we’ll choose the specific date and time that works best for you and your family. After booking, I’ll send you a few simple tips to help things go smoothly.
